Briefly, but completely answer the
following questions. They follow the plotline.
Why has Klatu
(Carpenter) come (second answer)?
To explain to the leaders of earth that their petty local squabbles endanger them greatly if their militaristic nature spills over to the rest of the civilized aliens.
Why and how is
Mr. Carpenter using up his welcome?
Mr. Carpenter always seems to be the topic of Bobby's conversation. He is a stranger and his mother and her boy friend think he is spending too much time with Bobby.
What would
cause Bobby to follow Carpenter (Klatu)?
Mr. Carpenter asks for a flashlight because the light in his room is out, but Bobby sees that there is light in Mr. Carpenter's room. Bobby is naturally curious and wants to know why Mr. Carpenter would tell him a fib.
What do you
suppose Klatu (Carpenter) is doing in the space ship?
A supposition question: if you have been watching and thinking about the story you might come up with the answer that Klatu is programming the ship and Gort to stop the electricity.
What things
deepen the mystery of Carpenter with Bobby’s mother’s friend?
The discovery of diamonds in Carpenter's room and that he gave two to Bobby. The diamonds are not from the planet earth.
What sign of
power did Klatu make? How was it special?
Klatu made all electricity cease for 30 minutes beginning at noon. The special element is that airplanes in flight and operating rooms, and other places where the ceasing of electricity would kill humans seemed not affected.
What should
the exceptions tell humans about the spaceman?
The exceptions of electricity NOT stopping should tell people that if the spaceman is the cause then he is not here to harm anyone.
What good
things come from fearing the spaceman?
Humans might learn to cooperate in fighting a common enemy. Beyond that humans should consider their place in the universe: it is not at the center of things because they are not so strong or able—one being has brought them to a standstill.
Why is Tom’s
(Bobby’s mother’s friend) bad for Earth?
Tom is only in the search for who Mr. Carpenter is for himself. He doesn't care about the planet or anyone else (as he says). He wants the power and the notariety that comes from having discovered who the spaceman is.
What reasons
might Gort have had for eliminating the two soldiers?
This is another supposition question. The soldiers may well have sounded an alarm that would have hindered Klatu being rescued. With a little foreshadowing they may have been considered aggressors whom the robots are programmed to eliminate.
How is peace
maintained in Klatu’s world federation?
The members of the federation Klatu is a part of have given absolute authority for preserving peace and punishing violators of that peace to the race of robots of which Gort is one example.
